TRAINING & RESEARCH PROGRAMS
PRACTICAL TRAINING PROGRAMS
• Open World Program for Cultural
Leaders: During 2004-2005, the Foundation coordinated
programs in Omaha, Nebraska, and Baltimore, Maryland, for 15 cultural
managers from Russia under the auspices of the Open World Program administered
by the Library of Congress. Participants were offered a series of seminars
and individual job shadowing experiences, combined with local home-stay
hosts.
• Community
Connections: This broad-based practical training
program for entrepreneurs, special educators, environmental advocates,
and elected local government officials from Georgia as well as Muslim
leaders from Kazakhstan, was coordinated in the greater Washington community
between January 1998 and May 2004 with the support of the U.S. Department
of State. More than 180 participants received practical training in
internships with businesses or educational institutions, stayed with
local families, and attended weekly seminars on business development
and other specialized topics.
A follow-on program allowed four experts on children with disabilities
to visit Georgia in 2000, conduct workshops with parents, educators
and specialists. An additional follow-on program conducted in Georgia
in 2004 focused its efforts on working with the business community.
• Women’s
Leadership – Educating a Nation on Behalf of Individuals with
Disabilities: With the support of a grant from
the U.S. Department of State, the Foundation launched a public relations
campaign in Georgia to encourage the acceptance of individuals with
disabilities into mainstream life. During 2000-2001, public service
ads were placed in the local media, a week-long workshop was conducted
for over 100 parents, teachers, and government officials, and hands-on
training in advocacy and NGO development for four Georgian women was
offered in the Washington area.
• Georgian
Hydro-Electric Project: American specialists in
power generation and privatization efforts have trained Georgian hydroelectric
energy planners and engineers to develop business plans. This project
was implemented during 1998 and 1999 in Georgia.
